Review of Connectix Virtual Game Station I have a new "blue and white" G3 300. When I use Connectix Virtual Game Station, it plays the games "okay," but the graphics are sluggish and they are boxy compared to the playstation hooked up to my television. The characters are rendered with "pixelation" and the controls are slow to respond using my keyboard. Now is the ATI card that comes with the new G3's compatible, should I use the new updated ATI drivers posted on Apple's website that came out 2-11-99 or the much older ones from Connectix. Do I need to disable the standard Apple "ATI" drivers and then install Connectix' version? Any info would be much appreciated! I'm surprised you are not getting the performance you were expecting with VGS. I would indeed download and install the latest ATI extensions. Remember, Game Station games are designed to play on a conventional television, which (next to your monitor) has very limited resolution. Mac OS 8.5 Problems Hi again! I tried to boot off the Mac OS CD, but no luck! I tried to move the installer and installer files onto the second hard disk and start from it and install on the second but I get this error message :"The IncompatHW plugin could not be found " But the plug in is there where it must be in the Upgrader Files folder. I have the upgrade but if I can't install the Mac OS 8.5 the upgrade is worthless. I have tried all the usual things: upgrading drivers, formatting the drive, starting with the extensions off, etc. Is it time to take my Mac OS 8.0 out of the box and drop 8.5? I hate this because I got used to 8.5. Do you have some other ideas? Daniel Stefan Nanboe Daniel- Your best bet would be to either (a) try and acquire another copy of the defective CD, or (b) take a look at MacFixIt and see if other users are having similar problems. G3 5300? Since you have been discussing upgrades the last couple of issues of My Mac, I was wondering if you knew why there are no upgrades to the G3 for the 5300. Or as an alternate, are there upgrades and where can they be found. I love my 5300c except it is getting slower (in comparison). BTW, I like My Mac and read it each month. Thanks for the good job. ric At this time, I can find no upgrade path for users of the 5300 series PowerBook. The vast amount of information that I've scanned through indicates that the 5300 series is not processor upgradeable. But remember they said that about the 5xxx and 6xxx series of desktop Macs, and look at the options that were developed to bring these users into the G3 level of use. You might want to check out the following locations for more information on the 5300 series: and And thanks for reading My Mac! Where have you been? My Mac is great! After reading my first issue (Feb. 99) I feel dumb for parting with nearly 8 bucks for the Mac Home Journal that I bought just a few days before. My only complaint is that I just now found out about it. I understand it must be difficult but can't you get more links to your site out there somehow? I hope you have a reader base large enough to allow you to continue your publication and offer it at no cost. This is truly a service to Mac fans. Thanks and I look forward to the next issue. M. Qualls" We've been here for almost five years now. :-) In fact, this summer will see our 50th monthly issue in digital print. Glad you enjoyed it as much as you did. We do work hard on it every month, and with over 250 links and some luck, more and more Mac users will find us in the future! And yes, MM will continue to remain a free magazine.
